Dr. Anastasia McIntosh recently returned from a vital 10-day mission to Tanzania with Rabies Free Africa. As one of the few veterinarians selected for this impactful mission, Dr. McIntosh played a crucial role in vaccinating over 1,200 animals against rabies, significantly contributing to the health and safety East African communities.

Dr. McIntosh has always been passionate about this cause and previously conducted rabies research with the CDC during veterinary school. When she learned of the opportunity to work with Rabies Free Africa, she applied immediately and was happy to be selected.

“Seeing the families and the children impacted me more than I could describe,” Dr. McIntosh shared during the trip. “To interact with them and know that they love animals just like we do; that’s why we’re here.”

Rabies Free Africa is a pivotal initiative committed to eradicating rabies globally, particularly Africa. The organization focuses on developing sustainable programs to eliminate human rabies deaths and establish robust surveillance systems for future outbreaks. Through mass vaccination campaigns, community-based programs, and innovative technologies like facial recognition for vaccinated pets, Rabies Free Africa is working toward eliminating human rabies deaths by 2030.

Polo Springs Veterinary Hospital actively supports Rabies Free Africa, donating a portion of proceeds from every rabies vaccination administered at our facility to the cause. This partnership also allows veterinarians, like Dr. McIntosh, to participate in annual trips, directly assisting vaccination efforts in communities most in need.

We encourage you to read the local news articles published before and after the trip to learn more about Dr. McIntosh's journey and the critical work of Rabies Free Africa.
